How to Generate More of the Right Kind of Revenue

How to Generate More of the Right Kind of Revenue

We all know that turnover is vanity and profit is sanity, which is why in Session Three of the CIRCLE Programme we focus on generating the right kind of revenue for your business.

Very early on in my business career, I read an article about saying ‘no’ to business.  It’s one of the most useful articles I’ve read and still apply the practice today.  It’s very tempting to say ‘yes’ to all kinds of business, particularly when you’re in the first few years of establishing your business.

However, as you’ve probably learnt by now, this isn’t a profitable way of growing your business.  The wrong kind of client or customer costs you more money in the long run because they’re never happy and you’ll waste a huge amount of time and energy trying to make them happy.

At Shirlaws, we start the Revenue journey with the ultimate Intent of your business.  It’s the ‘why’ of your business.  If you haven’t already, watch Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk on “Why”.  Once you understand the purpose for which your business exists, you can begin, with laser-like accuracy, to zone in on the long-term Vision, the Products and Services you’ll be offering and the Positioning your business will occupy in the market.  All these ducks need to be aligned before you sell so much as a bean.

Most businesses are busy selling their beans to everyone and anyone who comes along and happens to have enough money to buy them.  This leads to time wasting, burn out and low profits which is not a great way to grow a business.

So, whilst Session Three may look obvious to you, it isn’t.  There are six steps to take before you sell your beans and a further three steps to take after you’ve sold them.  Aligning these with your culture will trigger a series of ‘aha’ moments for you on The CIRCLE Programme and as with all the Shirlaws models and frameworks, you’ll wonder why something so simple can have such a powerfully positive effect on your business in such a short space of time.
